Week 52

Sunday, September 21, 2014

Today, we went to Grant's Farm in St. Louis.  Essentially, it is a hobby zoo that Ulysses Grant built.  They have all sorts of animals, ranging from elephants to kangaroos to lemurs, that you can get ridiculously close to.  PJ's favorite animal exhibit was feeding the baby goats, who were quite the bottle hogs (top picture).  We then went to the Clydesdale farm on the property.  This is where all the Budweiser Clydesdales are raised and trained from 6 months to 5 years old.  We got a behind the scenes tour and got to meet a retired gelding that was used as a hitch horse on one of the Budweiser wagons (middle picture).  We finished the day by stopping at the St. Louis Botanical Gardens.  We got there about two hours before it closed so we had to do a rush through.  The place was HUGE!  It was really pretty, and we got to feed monster sized coy fish.  We even had a nice statue of George Washington take a picture for us (bottom picture). The picture ended up being a bit crooked, but I like the artsy look of it.

Monday was my actual research day. I got some extra reagent on my hands, and it turned them blue.  Luckily, the blue goes away with time. But, until then, I got to annoy PJ by singing "I'm blue ba da dee da, I'd die if I was green."

Missouri has some of the prettiest sunrises and sunsets.

On the way back to Lexington, we stopped at the Gateway Arch.  It's massive.  We also decided to venture to the top (I had no idea you could go inside of it).  To get to the top, you have to ride up in these little pods that look like something out of Xenon.  The pods are supposed to hold 5 people, but luckily there was just two of us in ours.  The view from the top was awesome. You could see about 5 miles in every direction.

Patty really missed us while we were gone.  He was so desperate for attention that he let me put milk tabs on his feet as bracelets.  The sad part is that he didn't really seem to mind them too much.

Hopefully, the third fish is the charm!  On Thursday night, we cleaned out Sebastian's tank, and the fish had a minor freak out session but seemed to have recovered.  But, on Friday morning, PJ discovered the fish sticking out of Sebastian's mouth...so needless to say, the fish died and Sebastian ate him.  So, we bought another $1 fish...hopefully, this one lasts longer than the last two!
